 After
the founder, Cav. Ambrogio Castellano, Royal Average
Adjustor, the company was run by the Orlando family.
Ambrogio Castellano, the son of a shipbuilder and colonel
of the Bourbon fleet, came back to Sicily after completing
his studies in Switzerland.
In 1869, he founded our company and was the first person
to introduce Maritime Insurance for goods in Sicily.
He also made it possible to insure more valuable items
thanks to the Co-Insurances between first class Italian
and foreign Companies. After a few years, a large network
of Sub-Agents, Correspondents and Representatives was
in place, which produced a high level of business in
the Palermo offices.
This network was spread all over the regional territory
and soon it was used by various insurance companies
and risk managers in order to carry out maritime inspections
on goods which had been damaged.
Since then, the two sections of transport Collection
of risks and Average Agents, have been looked after
with particular attention by the administrators, who
over the decades, have been succeeded.
At
the end of the 1800s and in the first decades of the
1900s, the Company was also run with the help of
Dott. Vittorio Emanuele Orlando senior’s son-in-law,
who was a Lawyer, a University Professor and then
Prime Minister of the Italian government (one of the
“Big Four” who signed the Treaty of Versailles
at the
end of the First World War). Amongst the Minister’s
children, Carlo senior looked after the area of the
Average Agency. In 1950, he managed to increase the
number of Representatives which exceeded the 350 Insurance
Companies.
Amongst other activities, more than six generations
of the Orlando family have managed Lloyd Siciliano,
an Insurance Company which is still on the market
today but under another name, Progress Insurance based
in Palermo; Orlando Assicurazioni srl , a broker company
founded in 1979.
